New Students

Hello new student!

You are warmly welcome to study at the University of Vaasa and also to join us as a member of VYY. VYY represents all students of the University of Vaasa. You’ll see shortly that a VYY membership offers versatile and high quality member benefits and that the Student Union provides a wide range of services and activities for its members.

All Student Union members are warmly welcome to join our activities and, for example, committees, which are an easy way to participate in and affect those activities.

Additional information on VYY and its activities, benefits and services is available on this website. Our members’ well-being is important to us.

Whenever necessary, please feel free to contact the Executive Board and our staff, follow our weekly newsletter, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages or visit us at the service office.

We’ve put together useful information to this page to help you get through your first year of studies.

Enrolment

When you receive the approval letter, please familiarize yourself with all the accompanying materials very carefully. The instructions will tell you exactly what you need to do and by what time.

The most important thing is that you confirm acceptance of your University placing and pay the VYY membership fee in accordance with the Student Union’s fee guidelines. For students starting in the autumn term of 2017, the membership fee is payable till 15:00 on 25.8.2017 due to course registrations.

Be sure to keep / print a receipt of membership fee payment! You will need it when you arrive on campus.

You need to start searching for accommodation immediately. The Student Housing Foundation in Vaasa (VOAS) offers affordable accommodation to students, which is close to the university and services.

Before starting your studies

VYY and the University of Vaasa have cooperated to produce the New student’s ABC’s, an academic study guide. You have received it attached to the approval letter, and it can be found online.

In the VYY welcomes first year students- section you will find an introduction to students’ academic clubs, hobby clubs, and associations on campus.

We recommend you to take the first apartment offered, even if it does not match your wishes perfectly. Housing shortage in August and September is considerable, and for this reason you should accept the first option that turns up in order to secure your accommodation. Starting October onwards, rental homes start reappearing in bigger numbers, and by spring you may eventually find an apartment you really like and relocate to it.

Remember to notify both the post office and the local register office of Change of Address. And remember to choose Vaasa as your new municipality of residence if you’ve only recently arrived. By doing so, you will also receive all municipal services after that change.

Please study your copy of the letter to first year students carefully. There will also be a welcome greeting from your tutor in it. He is your University guide at the early stage of your studies.

The first weeks

The first days and weeks at the University are usually an avalanche of events. On their first day, new students are divided into tutor groups, followed by an introduction to the University, studies, and academic life. Your tutor is a volunteer from the Student Union who wishes to contribute to our work. The University of Vaasa is a close-knit community, and help is always available on request.

Remember to download free Frank App, with the application you will find student discounts wherever you go. Frank App is also an official student ID in Finland.  Frank App is available on App Store and Google Play. In case you wish to order a plastic student card, you’ll find more information from Frank.

Be sure to subscribe to the VYY weekly newsletter, like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram @ylioppilaskunta and Twitter VYYtweets.

VYY also organizes student parties where all new students of the University of Vaasa are welcome. Most legendary of them are the first night and first weekend parties, which are not to be missed! At the end of the tutorship period, an initiation ceremony is arranged, where new students will be formally accepted as members of the academic community.

Studies and leisure time

The Student Union also embraces a variety of associations that showcase their activities to potential new members of their association. The VYY community is an arena for academic associations, sports associations, political associations as well as culture clubs. In addition, new associations are set up each year. Be proactive and join in the activities you’re interested in!

The Student Union provides supervision of interests to support you at various stages of your studies. We will ensure that our students’ legal protection is implemented and that the University operates in full compliance with jointly agreed rules. If you encounter problems, you can always contact us. In order to help ensure our members’ well-being in everyday life, we have gathered a database of the various services that are available to our members.

VYY is an active organizer of cultural and leisure activities. Our events include the anniversary ball in February, sport events throughout the year, cultural events, other events that are self-organized or co-operated with Vaasa-based organizations, as well as many other kinds of meetups. Additionally, we are coming up with new activities continuously, so do come to committee meetings and share your own ideas!
