Apply to be an international tutor coordinator

The Student Union of the University of Vaasa is looking for a part-time INTERNATIONAL TUTOR COORDINATOR for a fixed-term employment relationship

Do you want a meaningful job as part of the everyday life of new students? Do you want to develop students' sense of community through tutoring and peer support? Has your experience with your tutor stuck in your mind, and do you want to leave your own mark on the tutor project and in international tutoring? 

The aim of the tutor project is to provide new students with a smooth transition into the academic community and to create relationships that promote students’ wellbeing. The international tutor coordinator plans and implements the tutor project together with the tutor coordinator and focuses especially on international degree students and incoming exchange students. Additionally, the coordinator works in collaboration with the Specialists at the Student Union, with the Student Union Executive Board, and the University of Vaasa.

The employment relationship of the International Tutor Coordinator is fixed-term until the end of January 2027.

The specific tasks of the International Tutor Coordinator are:

  • being primarily responsible for the implementation of tutoring for international students
  • organizing the tutor educator and tutor recruitments
  • planning and coordinating tutor training programs
  • organizing the reception of new students
  • organizing leisure program during fresher weeks together with tutors
  • being responsible for tutor project communication and reporting

The coordinator we are looking for has

  • initiative, organizational skills and good interpersonal skills
  • higher education studies, knowledge of the university community and Student Union activities
  • fluency or ability to work in both oral and written Finnish and English

We consider it an advantage if you have experience in tutoring and peer guidance, experience in working in an international community, understanding the importance of guidance activities and readiness to produce educational content, as well as experience in cooperation and development of activities between a student organization and a higher education institution.

We hope that you will start your work as soon as possible, but no later than March 1, 2026. The position is a part-time and fixed-term project worker position. Weekly working hours are approximately 18 hours. Working hours are divided into the spring planning and training period and the fall planning and implementation period, for a total of approximately 9 months.

The tutor coordinator's salary is based on salary group III of the Student Unions' collective agreement in relation to working hours. The basic salary for the position at the beginning of the employment relationship is 1021.68 euros per month. Any additional salary is determined by the Student Union collective agreement.

The distribution of working hours and the duration of the fixed-term contract are agreed in more detail in the employment contract.

VYY-Alumni ry

VYY-Alumni ry is the alumni association for the Student Union of the University of Vaasa. The association’s aim is to unite VYY actors from all time periods.

VYY-Alumni organizes annual events, company visits, and afterwork events that unite current and future alumni. The association was founded on 15 February 2013. It works in close cooperation with the student union and strives to support the student union through its network.

You are eligible to become a full member if you have actively worked for the benefit of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa. Any legal person who has advanced the Student Union’s aims can join as a supporting member.

The annual fee for individuals is 20 €/year or 100 €/lifetime membership. The supporting membership fee is 200 €/year.

You can join VYY-Alumni ry by filling out the membership application form and by paying the membership fee to the association’s bank account. As a member, you also support the Student Union through the alumnus association.

Projects

VYY recruits new project workers every year to organize various student events. As a project worker, you get valuable event organization experience and new contacts.

Boom City Appro: You can apply to become an Approcoordinator on your own or with a friend. The coordinator is responsible for planning, marketing and organizing the event.

Tutor Project: Every year, VYY hires two tutor coordinators for a part-time position. The coordinators organize the application process for tutor instructor and tutor positions.

Annual Ball: The annual ball coordinator is recruited to plan the party and the accompanying events, to find partners and to organise the event. There are many traditions associated with the celebrations, which you can read more about on the tradition page.

Positions of trust

In addition to the Representative Council, the Student Union elects a Board each year to be responsible for the operational activities of the Student Union. The Board term is a calendar year, and we look for applications annually in October-November.

In accordance with the University Act, students have representation in the university decision-making bodies. The administration student representatives (also referred to as HallOpEds) in the administrations of the University, VOAS and FSHS are elected every other year. We also occasionally have application periods for administration student representative positions mid-term, as student representatives are relieved of their duties for instance due to graduation.

Representative council

The student union's highest decision-making body is the 30-member Student Council. It is elected every two years. You can become a RepCo member by standing for election. The RepCo meetings are open to all VYY members, and we stream the meetings on the Student Union's Instagram. So if you are interested in the actions of RepCo, you can come along and follow the meetings.

Teams

Every year, the Students Union seeks people to join different teams. Teams are an easy way to gain experience in areas such as event organisation and communication.

In recent years, VYY has had teams such as Event Team, The VYY annual party team and BoomCityAppro staff.
