The Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) was founded in 1968 by students as their own community, to which every undergraduate student of University of Vaasa belongs. The status of the Student Union is based on the Universities Act and the Regulation on the Student Union. VYY serves as the voice of students within the university and in society. The Student Union defends students' rights, supports their well-being, and works to build a better everyday student life.
In practice, VYY:
- represents students in university decision-making and brings the student perspective into the development of education,
- provides guidance and support services related to studies, housing, or student life,
- organizes tutoring and Fresher events for new students,
- provides a student card and other services, such as items to borrow and a sauna facility to rent for students,
- supports and funds student organizations, such as subject-specific student associations and hobby clubs,
- engages in advocacy at the municipal, national, and even European level to make students’ lives smoother,
- and most importantly – creates opportunities for community, participation, and for every student to find their place in the academic environment
Without the Student Union, students would often be alone in the middle of large structures. The Student Union brings students together, brings up their needs and works to make studying more than just sitting in lecture halls - it is life with the right to feel well, to make a difference and to be heard.
How does VYY operate?
The Student Union operates democratically. Its highest decision-making body is the Representative Council, whose members are elected in elections held every two years. The daily operations are led by the Executive Board, supported by professional staff.
VYY’s activities are primarily funded by membership fees, the amount of which is decided each year by the Representative Council. These fees make many things possible – from services and events to advocacy – everything needed to help the student community thrive. A portion of the membership fee is forwarded to our national umbrella organizations, such as the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL). In addition to membership fees, income is also generated through events, investments, corporate partnerships, and rental of our sauna and meeting facilities.
