What is a student union, and what does it do?

The student union is a community and advocate for all university students. It acts as the students’ voice at the university and in society. It advocates for students, supports students’ wellbeing, and builds a better student life.

In practice, a student union

  • represents students in decision-making at the university and brings out the students’ point of view in developing teaching.
  • organizes guidance and support services for e.g. studying and living.
  • supports and funds student organizations, like subject organizations and hobby clubs and associations.
  • advocates for students in municipalities, in the state, and in Europe to ensure that daily life for students runs smoothly.
  • first and foremost, creates opportunities for community, participation, and funding your own place in the academic community.

A student union is democratic. The highest decision-making body is the Representative Council, whose members are chosen in elections. Students can impact what the student union does, how it operates, and what its values are. Daily operations are run by the Executive Board, and hired specialists work alongside to support them. The structure and principles are very similar to those of cities and municipalities.

A student union is not just administration and politics. It’s a concrete part of student life. Its work shows in better teaching practices, cheaper student meals, events, sports opportunities, and better mental health.

Without a student union, students would often be alone in the crossfire of massive structures. The student union unites students, raises their needs to the center, and works to ensure that student life is more than sitting in a lecture hall. It’s a life that includes the right to feel good, make an impact, and be heard.

What’s included in the member benefits for degree students? What about for postgraduate students?

A degree student receives national member benefits, such as numerous discounts for public services like transportation and culture venues, Kela meal subsidies, and the FSHS health services. The academic year sticker on your student card is also a membership benefit. Additionally, students are entitled to student financial benefits from Kela, and they include the student grant, the housing supplement, and the government guarantee for a student loan. The amount of study grant is dependent on your living situation.

Postgraduate students have more meager member benefits, and student union membership is not mandatory for them. Postgraduate students are not entitled to the FSHS services or the Kela meal subsidy. As a Student Union member, postgraduate students have access to the VR student discounts and several of VYY’s own membership benefits.

Special benefits for VYY members, both degree and postgraduate, include the membership discount for the Leipätehdas sauna facilities, rental and borrowed items like board games and sports equipment, VYY’s rental van, and the opportunity to participate in events and training organized by VYY. As a VYY member, you can impact the activities of the Student Union and get support for your student life.
