Student ID card

The University of Vaasa will introduce physical ID cards for students in the fall semester 2026. You must keep your student ID card visible whenever you spend time in the University of Vaasa’s facilities. The card will first act as an identification and student card, and later it will be adopted as a pass key to the University’s facilities.

After paying the Student Union membership fee, you’ll receive an academic year sticker on your ID card and can use it as a physical student card.

The ID card is free for students. You can still use your digital Slice student card application to access student discounts and benefits, but you need the physical ID card for spending time on campus.

If you study in the Vaasa campus, you can collect your card from VYY’s Service Office in the Konttori building on Puuvillakuja 8. Please be prepared to show photo identification when you collect your card.

I’m a new student starting in fall 2026

The University automatically orders your student ID card once you have (1) registered as attending and (2) filled out the Slice registration form online.

Fill out Slice’s electronic form during August by filling out the form on slice.fi/vyy. Use the student e-mail provided by the University in the form. Your e-mail address should activate in early August. If you want, you can simultaneously install the digital Slice student card application by following the instructions on our website under Student card. If you don’t want to install the Slice application, the information you provide on the digital form will only be used to make your student ID card.

Upload a clear photograph of yourself on the form. Check instructions for taking a good photo on this page under Instructions and incidents.

If you have registered as attending and filled out the Slice registration form by 31 August, you can collect your ID card from 15 September onwards at VYY’s Service Office. Please remember to bring a photo ID with you when collecting your ID card. Your tutor will also instruct you.

After paying the Student Union membership fee, you’ll get the academic year sticker on your student ID card and can also use it as a physical student card.

I’m already a student and use the digital Slice student card

You don’t need to order the card yourself. The University automatically orders your card once you have registered as attending. Since you’re already using the digital Slice student card, you don’t need to do anything else.

Check by 15 September at the latest that your photo on Slice matches the instructions provided below! You can find further instructions under Instructions and incidents.

If you register as attending by 15 September, you can collect your card from 1 October onwards at VYY’s Service Office. Please remember to bring a photo ID with you when collecting your card.

I’ve registered as attending after 15 September 2026

You don’t need to order the card yourself. The University automatically orders your student ID card once you have (1) registered as attending and (2) filled out the Slice registration form online.

If you have never registered on Slice, please do so on slice.fi/vyy. If you want, you can also start using the digital Slice student card. Please remember to register using your student e-mail provided by the University.

You can collect your ID card at VYY’s Service Office about a month after registering as attending. Please remember to bring a photo ID with you when collecting your card.

I’m already a student, but I’ve never registered for the digital Slice student card

The University automatically orders your student ID card once you have (1) registered as attending and (2) filled out the Slice registration form online.

Register on Slice by filling out the form online at slice.fi/vyy by 15 September 2026. Please remember to register with the student e-mail provided by the University. You can also install the digital Slice student card application by following the instructions on our website under Student card. If you don’t want to use the digital student card app, Slice will only use the information you provide for making your ID card.

I’m an international student beginning my studies in the term 2026–2027

The University automatically orders your student ID card once you have (1) registered as attending and (2) filled out the Slice registration form online.

Please register on Slice at slice.fi/vyy only once your entry into Finland is certain. This way, we ensure that you receive your card when you need it. Please register online for Slice with the student e-mail provided by the University.

If you’re an exchange or postgraduate student, you can choose to pay the Student Union membership fee. If you do pay the fee, you’ll get the academic year sticker on your student ID card and can also use it as a physical student card.

I study in Seinäjoki, Pori, Kokkola, or Helsinki

If you are a student at the University of Vaasa, and you study in Seinäjoki, Pori, Kokkola, or Helsinki, you will receive an ID card similarly to those in Vaasa.

The University automatically orders your student ID card once you have (1) registered as attending and (2) filled out the Slice registration form online.

Make sure you’ve registered for Slice on slice.fi/vyy.

The cards will be made in several batches. We will notify you about where to collect your ID card. Please be prepared to show a form of photo ID when collecting your card.

Instructions and incidents

How do I add a photo for the ID card?

Your ID card photo is the same photograph you upload for the Slice student card app (or the Slice registration form).

Please check that the photograph you’ve uploaded complies with the instructions below. If your photograph does not match the instructions, please update the photograph by 15 September 2026 by going on slice.fi/update.

If your ID card photo does not comply with the instructions, you may need to order another card and pay for it yourself!

What kind of photograph is suitable for the ID and student card?

A clear portrait of your face, where you are easily recognizable. A good-quality selfie is suitable if it clearly shows your entire face.
Face and facial expression: Look directly at the camera with a neutral expression and with your mouth closed.
Background: Use a light, even background like a white or light grey wall.
Lighting: Make sure the light hits your face evenly. Avoid strong shadows and reflections, like a glare from glasses.
Crop: Your photo should be a closeup that clearly shows your face, neck, and the top of your shoulders.
Headgear and accessories: Sunglasses and other accessories that cover your face are not allowed. You may only use headgear in your photo for religious or medical reasons.
Quality: Your photo is in focus and the colors are natural. Blurry, out of focus photographs are often rejected.

What should I do with my old plastic student card?

You can use your current plastic student card until the end of your current academic year sticker or until you receive your ID card. Please remember to bring photo ID with you when collecting your ID card.

I’ve lost my ID card. What should I do?

If you’ve lost your card, please notify the Student Union ylioppilaskunta@vyy.fi immediately, so we can cancel the access on the card. You need to order a new ID card. The Student Union will instruct you on how to order a new card. You need to pay for this new card yourself, and it costs 12 €.
