VYY nominates Maria Saita as a candidate for the SYL Board

The Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) has decided to nominate Maria Saita to the Board of the Union of Student Unions of Finland (SYL) for 2025. The decision was made at the RepCo meeting on 3 September 2024.

"It is great that our student union is actively involved in advocacy work at the national level. Maria has a wide experience of advocacy and we would like to see someone like her in national student lobbying as well," says Tiina Saukko, Chair of the Representative Council.

Saita studies Administrative Sciences and is currently a member of the VYY Board, responsible for municipal affairs and communication. She has previously been a member of the board of the student organization Hallinnoijat ry and the chair of the RepCo group Red-Green Alliance as well as 2nd vice-chair of the representative council. In addition, Saita is a member of the city council in Vaasa and vice-chair of the Green Party's council group. As a council member, Saita has actively promoted the interests of young people and students in the Vaasa region.

"SYL provides an important arena of influence for students all over Finland, and the upcoming municipal elections offer the student movement an opportunity to highlight student advocacy more strongly at the local level. As especially the student housing and livelihood situation is getting worse, we need experienced and courageous influencers in the national student union to tackle these issues", Saita comments. 

The 2025 Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland will be elected at the General Assembly on 15-16 November 2024 in Espoo.
