The representative body of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) has decided to nominate Maria Saita to the board of the Finnish Student Union (SYL) for 2025 at its meeting on 3 September 2024.
“It is great that our student union is also actively involved in national advocacy work. Maria is a long-standing influencer in our student union and we want to see someone like her also in national student advocacy,” emphasizes the representative body’s chairwoman, Tiina Saukko.
Saita is studying administrative sciences and currently serves as a member of the VYY board, responsible for urban policy and communications. She has previously served on the board of the subject organization Hallinnoijat ry and as the chair of the representative body group Red-Green Alliance and the 2nd vice-chair of the representative body. In addition, Saita is a city councilor in Vaasa and the vice-chair of the Green council group. As a councillor, Saita has actively promoted the interests of young people and students in the Vaasa area.
"SYL offers an important arena for students across Finland to influence. The upcoming municipal elections offer the student movement an opportunity to highlight the needs of students more strongly at the local level. The particularly worrying situation surrounding student housing and livelihoods requires experienced and courageous influencers in the national student organisation," Saita commented.
The 2025 board of the Finnish Student Union will be elected at the union meeting to be held in Espoo on 15–16 November 2024.
