The Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) is publishing its first carbon footprint report with the aim of reducing VYY’s carbon footprint.
For calculations VYY uses the CarbonLink calculation tool, which was implemented at VYY in 2023. CarbonLink calculates the carbon footprint in carbon dioxide equivalents. VYY’s total emissions for the 2024–2025 academic year were 74,437 kg CO2e and 54,141 kg CO2e for the 2023–2024 academic year. VYY’s emissions have thus increased by approximately 20,000 kg CO2e, although this increase is largely attributable to one-time projects, such as the renovation of the Leipis sauna facility and the implementation of a case management system. VYY’s carbon footprint per member in the calendar year 2024 was 12.1 kg CO2e, while in 2025 it was 14.4. Excluding one-time projects, the figure is 11.1 kg CO2e. VYY’s carbon footprint per member from normal operations is therefore decreasing.
There have been challenges in the calculation, such as updating the chart of accounts and ensuring the accuracy of categorization, so VYY will continue the calculation to enable emission reduction measures. The next step is an action plan to promote sustainable development at VYY.
