Yesterday on 15 September 2026, the Representative Council of the Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) nominated Mimmi Eskelä as VYY’s candidate for the National Union of University Students in Finland SYL’s Board 2027. Eskelä studies economics and public policy and management, and she is the VYY Executive Board member responsible for municipal affairs in 2026.

“In next year’s parliamentary elections, students’ voices must be heard nationally to secure free education. At the same time, we need to emphasize student subsistence, shed light on the challenges brought along by debt, and offer concrete solutions for student housing development”, Eskelä outlines.

Eskelä is a fifth year student in economics and a third year student in administrative sciences at the University of Vaasa. Her position in VYY’s Executive Board includes municipal policy and the entities of housing and subsistence under social policy. Eskelä is also in charge of VYY’s parliamentary election campaign 2027 and the Student Union’s actions in sustainable development. In addition to her position in the Board, she has advocated for students in the Representative Council and as an administration student representative.

Eskelä worries about students’ subsistence and the position of international students. “We need to recognize the challenges in subsistence that international students face, as well as the specific needs of student housing. Every student must have the opportunity to fully focus on their studies and participate in the Finnish academic community.”

During her year in the Executive Board, Eskelä has actively taken a stand for student housing development, both locally in the media and nationally with members of parliament. Additionally, she has advocated locally for a night bus service in Vaasa by submitting a proposal and advancing the matter together with City Council groups.

The Chair of VYY’s Representative Council Julius Pentti is pleased with Eskelä’s candidacy. “Next year will be significant for advocacy in student housing, both in Vaasa and the whole Finland. Mimmi has strong knowledge in this area. Mimmi is a strong advocate who looks for solutions constructively, purposefully, and collaboratively with different actors”, Pentti praises.

The SYL Board for 2027 is elected at the General Assembly on 13–14 November 2026.
