In their meeting on March 11, 2025, the Representative Council of The Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) approved a new policy paper for the student union. The entirely revised policy paper determines policies and guidelines for educational, social, and municipal affairs and outlines the student union’s objectives for influencing social issues. It acts as a set of guidelines for the daily operations and decision-making of VYY’s Executive Board and staff.
“The need for revision had grown significantly, and I’m glad that updating the policy paper is now finalised. The Student Union finally has a new, more effective policy paper to support our advocacy”, comments Chair of VYY’s Representative Council, Jonni Kuortti.
This complete revision of the policy paper has been a long process, which has involved the representative council and VYY’s staff. The Representative Council participated in the revision through working groups, informal meetings, and rounds of comments.
“We had important discussions with council groups while working on the new policy paper. We discussed which topics the student union should advocate for in the future, and how we can improve the daily lives of students more effectively”, says one of the coordinators in the revision process, Emma Lehtonen.
“I want to thank Emma and Jasmin for leading this process, and every council member who participated in the revision. We now have an extensive policy paper, which includes our objectives for advocacy on all levels from local to national”, says Jonni Kuortti.
The new policy paper is currently on our website only in Finnish (English update coming).
